Romania’s coffee market is largely controlled by international companies with strong brand portfolios and nationwide distribution networks. Financial data from RisCo.ro highlights three major players in the sector: Jacobs, Doncafe, and Tchibo.
Jacobs leads by revenue
Jacobs Douwe Egberts RO SRL ranks first in terms of revenue, reporting RON 618 million in turnover.
The company posted a net profit of RON 5.8 million, slightly lower than in the previous reporting period.
With 91 employees, the company generates approximately RON 6.8 million in revenue per employee. Its majority shareholder is Jacobs Douwe Egberts International BV.
Its Romanian portfolio includes brands such as Jacobs, L’OR, and Peet’s Coffee.
Doncafe tops profit rankings
In terms of profitability, Strauss Romania SRL, the company behind the Doncafe brand, ranks first.
The company reported RON 299 million in revenue and RON 12 million in net profit. It employs 230 people, generating around RON 1.3 million per employee.
Strauss Romania is part of Strauss Coffee BV, and its Romanian portfolio includes Doncafe, Amigo, and BeanZ.
Tchibo reports strong profit growth
Tchibo Brands SRL ranks third by revenue, with RON 237 million in turnover.
The company posted RON 7.9 million in net profit, representing a 42% increase compared with the previous reporting period.
Its brand portfolio includes Tchibo, Davidoff Coffee, Eduscho, and Cafissimo.
Foreign ownership dominates the market
All three companies are ultimately controlled by groups with Dutch ownership, illustrating the strong presence of international players in Romania’s coffee market.
While Jacobs leads by revenue, Doncafe stands out as the most profitable player among the three major brands.
