USR Bucharest has proposed a pilot program called “Green Friday”, which would make public transport free every Friday in Bucharest. The initiative aims to increase public transport usage and reduce car traffic, according to Mediafax.
A measure to shift mobility behavior
The proposal is part of a broader package of six measures aimed at modernizing urban mobility.

According to USR representatives, free transport one day per week could act as a direct incentive to change commuting habits.
Dragoș Radu stated that the measure is realistic and could quickly improve the attractiveness of public transport.
Estimated budget impact
The annual cost of the program is estimated at RON 25–30 million.
Additional measures
The package also includes:
– expanding dedicated bus lanes
– rehabilitating tram lines
– developing transport networks in new residential areas
– reorganizing existing routes
Institutional reform
USR proposes that TPBI becomes the single authority for planning, regulation, and ticketing, while STB operates strictly as a service provider.
Transition to green transport
The plan also sets a target to eliminate diesel buses from the STB fleet by 2035, transitioning to cleaner alternatives. Lucian Judele said the initiative could help make public transport the preferred option for residents.
A similar program offering free public transport on Fridays is already implemented in Cluj-Napoca.
