How a Romanian comedy platform reached 50,000 users in two years

From fragmented content to a professional hub — and future plans for series

ComedyBox, founded by Cristian Sorea and his team, emerged from a simple observation: Romanian stand-up was growing fast, but lacked a professional space for filming and organizing shows. Built without external funding and relying solely on subscriptions, the platform combines high-quality production with defined workflows. In just two years, it has drawn over 50,000 users, including roughly 16,000 monthly paying subscribers.

Soon after launch, Adina Clepcea joined to bring operational structure. According to Economedia, the founding vision focused on missing infrastructure rather than content scarcity. “The scene was growing fast, but there wasn’t a place where comedy could be professionally filmed and housed in one ecosystem,” recalls Cristian Sorea.

Behind the scenes, ComedyBox acts as an open workshop where comedians evolve according to talent. Productions follow strict steps — concept, filming, editing, technical checks — and several recurring formats have become staples, including ‘Una Scurtă’, ‘Râzi ca prostu’ and ‘Și da și nu’. The most challenging project so far, Cupa ComedyBox, spanned over ten days and proved the team’s capacity for complex logistics.

Revenues come exclusively from subscriptions, while artists are compensated based on each project’s scope and role in the editorial strategy. The platform offers integrated production and tailored promotional materials — a competitive advantage that helped attract international collaborators. “Our goal is simple: the artist walks away with a premium product and fair compensation,” Sorea explains.

Next steps include expanding the marketing and commercial team and developing new formats. In the medium term, ComedyBox aims to produce scripted series and create mechanisms to identify new talent through professional video content, linking digital visibility with live shows — a structure built to support the market’s future growth.
