Netflix reportedly exploring $ deal to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery

Share

Netflix is reportedly considering a takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery, the entertainment group behind HBO, DC Comics, and Harry Potter, according to Reuters.

Sources say Netflix has hired Moelis & Co., the investment bank that recently advised Skydance Media on its Paramount Global acquisition, to assess a potential bid. The streaming giant has already been granted access to Warner Bros. Discovery’s confidential financial data, signaling serious interest.

A merger that could reshape Hollywood

If the deal goes through, Netflix would gain control over some of the most iconic franchises in history — including Harry Potter, Looney Tunes, and DC Universe. It could also integrate HBO Max, strengthening its dominance in the global streaming market.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s portfolio spans Warner Bros. Entertainment, HBO, Warner Bros. Television Group, and TNT Sports International, among others.

Sarandos: “We’ve been creators, not buyers”

Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos commented that while the company has traditionally been a creator rather than an acquirer, it remains open to opportunities that enhance its entertainment offering. However, he clarified that Netflix is not interested in traditional cable assets like CNN or Food Network:
We’ve been clear before — we have no interest in owning traditional media networks. That hasn’t changed.

Warner Bros. Discovery, meanwhile, is evaluating several strategic options, including a potential split or sale, after receiving multiple acquisition offers from Paramount Skydance.

Should Netflix move forward, the deal could become the largest streaming merger ever, redefining global entertainment power dynamics.
