Bill Gates Meets AU Commission Chair Moussa Faki Mahamat to Support Innovation and Investment in Africa

Bill Gates, Chair of the Gates Foundation, met with African Union leader Moussa Faki Mahamat in Addis Ababa to discuss partnerships in health, education, and technology across the African continent.

Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft and Chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, paid an official visit to the headquarters of the African Union (AU) in Addis Ababa, where he was received by Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission. The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation in key development sectors including public health, education, sustainable agriculture, and digital transformation.

According to a statement released by the African Union, the discussions centered on expanding strategic partnerships that support African-led initiatives through innovative solutions and impact-driven investment. Both Gates and Mahamat emphasized the vital role of technology and smart financing in addressing the challenges facing Africa’s growing youth population.

Bill Gates, globally renowned for his philanthropic work and leadership in the fight against infectious diseases, reaffirmed that Africa remains a top priority for the Gates Foundation. The Foundation is already partnering with several African governments and institutions, and Gates reiterated his commitment to supporting programs that foster equity, access to essential services, and local innovation.

Moussa Faki Mahamat, a seasoned diplomat and former Prime Minister of Chad, has been leading the AU Commission since 2017. A strong advocate of African integration, he highlighted the importance of sustainable and efficient partnerships aligned with Africa’s development vision, particularly the Agenda 2063 framework.

The meeting underscores the shared commitment to accelerating the implementation of tangible solutions in critical sectors, aiming to build a more equitable and prosperous future for Africa.
