Toyota unveils GR GT, a 650-hp hybrid supercar

Share

Toyota has officially introduced the GR GT, a two-seat hybrid supercar delivering 650 horsepower and 850 Nm of torque to the rear wheels, with a top speed exceeding 320 km/h. The model will also receive a dedicated racing version – the GR GT GT3 – while Lexus prepares a fully electric alternative.

Developed by Toyota’s Gazoo Racing division, the GR GT follows the classic grand tourer formula: long hood, low stance and a newly developed 4.0-liter V8 engine mounted at the front and driving the rear axle. The hybrid system boosts overall performance, with Toyota suggesting final output could rise before production begins in 2027.

“We aimed to give the driver a true sense of unity between human and machine,” Toyota stated. Company president Akio Toyoda was directly involved in development after extensive testing sessions on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

The twin-turbo V8 features a compact “hot vee” layout, dry-sump lubrication and a specially tuned exhaust for a racing-inspired sound. Power flows through a newly developed eight-speed automatic transmission with wet clutch. The supercar rides on a tubular spaceframe infused with carbon fiber, aluminum body panels and carbon Brembo brakes. Curb weight stands at 1,750 kg with a 45%-55% front-to-rear balance.

GR GT GT3 heads to the racetrack

The GR GT GT3 will replace the aging Lexus RC-F GT3 in global endurance and sprint racing. It keeps the same 4.0-liter V8 but drops the hybrid system. Output will be capped at around 550 horsepower as required by FIA GT3 Balance of Performance regulations.

Lexus prepares the electric successor

Lexus is developing the fully electric version under the LFA Concept name. The future EV will feature a minimalist interior, steer-by-wire technology and a low 1.2-meter height. Launch is expected after 2027–2028. Photo: TechRider
