Danone Romania: adaptability at the core of budget optimization and real-time reporting

Share

In an increasingly complex business environment, Danone Romania defines 2025 through one key concept: adaptability. According to Forbes, George Năstase, Head of Finance FMCG Central Eastern Europe at Danone mentioned that this year has placed unprecedented emphasis on efficiency, budget optimization, and real-time reporting.

Digitalization, AI, and pressure on consumption

Năstase points to three global trends reshaping FMCG and retail: accelerated digitalization, the integration of artificial intelligence, and sustainability becoming a strategic imperative. Automation and personalization are redefining operational models, while consumers are increasingly demanding healthier products and environmentally friendly packaging.

These trends overlap with economic and geopolitical volatility, putting pressure on costs and margins. In Central and Eastern Europe, the FMCG market recorded moderate growth, but rising private-label competition and more cautious consumers weighed on profitability. In Romania, the market grew in value in 2025, supported by inflation and “up-trading,” yet consumer loyalty and purchasing power declined.

“Internally, 2025 has been about efficiency, optimized budgets, real-time reporting, and the ability to adapt quickly to fiscal and economic changes,” Năstase explains.

Higher costs and continued investment

Energy and raw material price volatility, combined with VAT increases, directly affected final prices and consumer behavior. As a result, Danone recalibrated its commercial strategy and tightened cost control to preserve competitiveness.

Despite expectations of continued challenges, the company plans to maintain its local investment strategy, focusing on innovation, technology, sustainability, and nutrition education.
In 2024, Danone Romania reported revenues exceeding RON 1.1 billion. Since acquiring the Bucharest dairy plant in 1996, the company has invested around €100 million in modernization, transforming it into one of Danone’s most efficient production units in Europe, with an annual capacity of 75,000 tons of yogurt.
