Deal may include AI chips as Microsoft and Nvidia strengthen their market positions
OpenAI is in discussions with Amazon regarding a potential investment and an agreement to use Amazon’s artificial intelligence chips, CNBC confirmed. Sources familiar with the talks say the details remain fluid and subject to change.
According to a source who requested anonymity due to the confidentiality of the discussions, the investment could exceed $10 billion. The Information was the first outlet to report on the potential deal.

The talks follow OpenAI’s completion of a restructuring process in October, when the company also disclosed details of its partnership with Microsoft. The changes gave OpenAI greater freedom to raise capital and collaborate with other players across the broader AI ecosystem.
Microsoft has invested more than $13 billion in OpenAI since 2019. However, an October statement confirmed that Microsoft no longer holds a right of first refusal to provide OpenAI’s computing services. OpenAI is also now able to co-develop certain products with third parties.
Amazon has already invested at least $8 billion in OpenAI rival Anthropic, but a deal with OpenAI would significantly expand its presence in the fast-growing generative AI market.
Meanwhile, competition continues to intensify. Microsoft announced last month plans to invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic, while Nvidia is set to invest up to $10 billion in the same startup.
