ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG), one of Europe’s leading rail freight operators, has announced the expansion of its intermodal transport network, including new connections targeting the Romanian market, according to Revista Cariere.
The Austrian group has launched two new routes: TransFER Duisburg–Rotterdam and TransFER Salzburg–Offenbach. Both services allow the transport of individual wagons and containers on fixed schedules and are designed to improve access to key logistics hubs in Germany, the Netherlands and Austria, offering predictable and efficient rail solutions for customers.

For Romania-bound traffic, the former TransFER Genk–Curtici service has been reconfigured as TransFER Liège–Curtici, now operating seven round trips per week from Liège. Located at the heart of the Benelux region, Liège provides strong connections to the North Sea ports of Rotterdam, Antwerp and Zeebrugge and serves as a strategic hub linking seaports, industrial centres and inland markets.
At the same time, RCG has introduced the TransFER Duisburg–Curtici route, dedicated to continental freight flows, with three weekly round trips. Together, the two services consolidate and streamline rail traffic to Curtici.
The expansion follows the recent launch of the TransFER Budapest–Curtici connection, linking the BILK intermodal terminal in Budapest with western Romania once a week. BILK is a key intermodal hub between Western Europe and South-Eastern Europe, while Curtici acts as a gateway to Romania, the Balkans and Turkey.
In 2024, the ÖBB Group transported around 80 million tonnes of freight and reported a punctuality rate of 94%, supported by annual investments exceeding €5 billion in rail infrastructure and rolling stock.
