Metro fares in Bucharest could increase significantly starting May 1, 2026, according to a draft order published by the Ministry of Transport. The proposal, submitted by Metrorex, targets an average fare increase of around 40%.

Higher prices for tickets and subscriptions

Under the proposal, a single trip would rise from 5 RON to 7 RON, while a two-trip ticket would increase to 14 RON, up from 10 RON. A 10-trip pass would cost 55 RON, compared to the current 40 RON.

Subscription prices are also set to increase. The 24-hour pass would reach 18 RON (from 12 RON), the weekly pass 60 RON (from 45 RON), and the monthly pass 140 RON, up from 100 RON. Longer-term subscriptions would rise to 700 RON for six months and 1,300 RON for a full year.

New fares for integrated Metrorex–STB travel

For integrated transport with STB, a single 120-minute ticket would cost 9 RON, while two trips would be priced at 18 RON. A 10-trip package would cost 72 RON.

Integrated subscriptions would be set at 23 RON for 24 hours, 79 RON for one week, 196 RON for one month, 980 RON for six months, and 1,770 RON for one year.

Previously purchased tickets remain valid

Tickets bought before the new pricing comes into effect will remain valid until all trips are used or their validity period expires.

Reason behind the price increase

According to the explanatory note, the fare adjustment is driven by financial constraints. The 2026 budget includes a subsidy of 761,490,000 RON, which would still result in an estimated loss of 451,241,030 RON.
