Action Continues Its Fast Expansion on the Romanian Market

Dutch retailer Action, one of Europe’s largest non-food discount chains, is expanding its presence in Romania with two new store openings—just one month after its official debut. Following the launch in Pitești, the company has now opened locations in Oradea and Arad on Thursday, October 9.

The two stores feature 14 product categories and a selection of 6,000 items, ranging from toys and DIY products to household goods, gardening supplies, and food. Around 1,500 products are priced under 5 lei.

“We are very happy to open the second and third stores in Romania, in Oradea and Arad, just two weeks after launching the first store in Pitești. Customers gave us a warm welcome in Pitești, and we are delighted to bring the Action formula closer to more Romanians,” said Boyko Tchakarov, General Manager of Action Romania.

Each store covers approximately 875 square meters and employs 19 people. The Oradea store is located at Calea Aradului 87A (Oradea Shopping City), while the Arad store is at Aurel Vlaicu 225-235 (Agora Mall). Both are open Monday to Sunday, from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM.

Long-Term Expansion Plans

Action entered the Romanian market in September with its first store in Supernova Shopping Center Pitești, covering over 840 sqm and managed by a team of 18 employees. Romania has thus become the 14th country where the retailer operates.

With more than 3,000 stores across Europe and nearly 80,000 employees from 151 nationalities, Action created over 10,500 new jobs in 2024. In Romania, the company will compete directly with Pepco, Jumbo, and other discount chains, entering a market segment that continues to grow rapidly.

Last month, Joost Uwents, CEO of WDP, and Hajir Hajji, CEO of Action, officially signed the contract to build a distribution center in Romania. The signing ceremony took place at Action’s international headquarters in Zwaagdijk, attended by Jens Burgers, Supply Chain Director, and Jacco Straaijer, Expansion Manager.
