On the sidelines of the United Nations Financing for Development Conference (#FfD4) held in Seville, the Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, His Excellency Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, held a strategic meeting with the Prime Minister of Spain, His Excellency Pedro Sánchez. The meeting emphasized strengthening the partnership between the African Union and Spain, focusing on bilateral cooperation and urgent reforms in the global financial architecture.
Appreciation for Spain’s Hosting and Support
The AU Commission Chair expressed gratitude to Spain for hosting the #FfD4 conference in Seville and welcomed the opportunity to advocate for urgent reforms to address systemic inequalities within the international financial system. In this context, the African official reiterated the continent’s commitment to collaboration under the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two parties.
Pillars of Cooperation: Peace, Migration, and Agenda 2063
Key topics discussed included peace and security, maritime governance, migration, and the implementation of Agenda 2063 – Africa’s strategic development plan. The AU Chair called for joint actions to prevent conflicts and manage migration in an orderly and sustainable manner. Support for a Fairer Global Financial Architecture
Another major point of discussion was the need for a fairer international financial architecture that supports sustainable development and provides real opportunities for emerging African economies. The AU Chair urged Spain to back Africa’s call in this direction, while emphasizing the potential to expand bilateral trade in strategic sectors such as automotive, medical technology, textiles, and tourism.
