Software-defined vehicles, AI and electrification take center stage

From January 6 to 9, Las Vegas will once again host the world’s biggest tech players at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2026. Automakers remain key participants, with BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and the Honda-Sony partnership preparing major announcements, according to Automotive News.

BMW will focus on its Neue Klasse architecture, the platform underpinning the BMW iX3 launched in 2025. The German automaker describes it as a major leap forward and its first true “software-defined vehicle.”

While no new model is expected, BMW will highlight efficiency gains, extended range, and advanced digital features such as the Panoramic iDrive display.

Mercedes-Benz will debut the new GLC in the US and showcase how it integrated Google and Microsoft functionalities into its latest infotainment system, coordinated through artificial intelligence.

Although Volvo will skip CES, its parent group Geely will attend, bringing AI-driven technologies and models such as the Zeekr 009 luxury van, the Zeekr 9X PHEV SUV, and the Galaxy M9 PHEV.

Sony will once again present the Afeela electric sedan, developed with Honda. CES 2026 is expected to feature a near-production pre-series version, ahead of limited US deliveries planned for summer. New concepts hinting at Afeela 2 and Afeela 3 may also appear.

Major suppliers including Bosch, ZF, and Schaeffler will also be present, showcasing advances in autonomous driving, safety, and infotainment while seeking long-term partnerships with automakers.
