Global EV sales hit record 2.1 million units in September

Electric and plug-in hybrid sales up 26% worldwide
Global sales of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles rose by 26% in September, reaching a record 2.1 million units, according to data from research firm Rho Motion.

China remained the driving force, accounting for about two-thirds of global sales, or nearly 1.3 million vehicles. “September is typically the most active month for car purchases in China, and buyers rushed to benefit from subsidies for old vehicles before they expired in some regions,” said Charles Lester, data manager at Rho Motion.

Surging demand in the U.S. and solid growth in Europe
In North America, sales hit 215,000 units — up 66% from last year — boosted by a rush of purchases ahead of the expiration of the $7,500 federal tax credit. Analysts warn demand may cool in late 2025, though automakers like GM and Hyundai are offering discounts to sustain sales.

Europe saw a 36% increase to 427,541 units, driven by German incentives and strong UK demand. Tesla’s new, more affordable Model Y variant is expected to intensify competition soon.

Other global regions recorded a 48% jump, totaling 153,594 vehicles sold.

Tax changes may slow growth by year-end
While government incentives have fueled expansion through the first three quarters of 2025, reduced subsidies in the U.S. and China could moderate growth by the year’s end, Rho Motion said.
