Groupama Asigurări has become the first insurer in Romania to apply telematics technology to CASCO car insurance, linking premiums directly to real driving behavior.
The system, known as Autocontrol, was launched in 2017 and uses a device fitted to the car together with a mobile app that records speed, braking intensity, acceleration, and incidents. Based on these factors, each driver receives a driving score, which can lead to discounts of up to 40%.
More than 5,000 drivers are currently enrolled, with 70% achieving the “Prudent” score, which grants the maximum discount.

The remaining drivers fall into the “Needs Improvement” category with a 20% discount, while only a small minority are classified as “Warrior” for risky driving.
“Autocontrol rewards prevention and responsibility behind the wheel—it doesn’t punish mistakes. It’s useful for both beginner and experienced drivers, and it helps parents monitor how their young drivers behave,” said Călin Matei, CEO of Groupama Asigurări.
Customers start with a 20% discount and can earn further reductions as their score improves, with no penalties if it decreases.
In December, Groupama will launch a reward campaign for the safest drivers, offering free CASCO and RCA insurance and defensive driving courses.
The insurer says the program not only reduces client costs but also contributes to road safety by encouraging responsible driving habits.
