Swiss group Holcim has completed two acquisitions in the demolition-recycling sector and agreed to a third, strengthening its footprint in circular construction across Europe. Together, the three companies have a combined annual permitted processing capacity of around 1.3 million tonnes.

Holcim has finalized the acquisition of Thames Materials, a major recycler of construction and demolition waste in West London and surrounding counties. The group has also acquired a majority stake in A&S Recycling GmbH, a Hanover-based company operating in northern Germany. In addition, Holcim has reached an agreement to purchase a demolition-materials recycler in northwestern France.

“These acquisitions – Thames Materials, A&S Recycling GmbH and the company in northwestern France – reinforce our leadership in circular construction and support our NextGen Growth 2030 goal of recycling over 20 million tonnes of demolition materials annually. The future of construction is circular, and I look forward to shaping that future together with our new colleagues,” said Miljan Gutovic, CEO of Holcim.

With Thames Materials integrated, Holcim can now provide circular construction services across Greater London, building on the acquisition of Sivyer Logistics in East London in 2023. In Germany, the three A&S Recycling sites around Greater Hanover bring Holcim’s national recycling network to 10 centers. In France, the newly acquired site expands the group’s presence and raises its total number of recycling centers in the country to 28.

The acquisitions will also advance the use of ECOCycle, Holcim’s circular construction technology designed to incorporate recycled demolition materials into new building projects. Holcim sees circularity as a key strategic pillar for meeting sustainability and efficiency targets in the construction industry.
