Hyundai temporarily halts Czech production amid weak demand

Share

South Korean carmaker Hyundai will temporarily suspend production at its Nosovice plant in the Czech Republic, the company’s only manufacturing site in the European Union. The factory will shut down for four days next week, including October 28th, due to slowing vehicle demand.

“This is an adjustment to current market conditions and vehicle demand,” said spokesperson Jan Rodek.

Operations will continue only on Wednesday, while employees at home will receive 70% of their wages. The decision follows similar pauses earlier this year — five days in September, two in January, and two in February — as the European car market faces weaker demand and a slow shift toward electric vehicles.

The Nosovice facility, which employs 3,100 workers, produced 330,890 cars in 2024 (down 2.8% year-on-year) and targets 295,000 units for 2025, an 11% decline. It assembles the Hyundai i30, Tucson (petrol, hybrid, plug-in) and Kona Electric, and supports another 8,700 supplier jobs in the region.
