JPMorgan CEO warns Europe’s weakness could impact the U.S. economy: “We need a long-term strategy to help them become strong”

Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase & Co, the largest U.S. bank, has warned that Europe’s economic vulnerabilities could directly affect the United States. Speaking at the Reagan National Defense Forum, Dimon criticized Europe’s heavy bureaucracy and slow policymaking, according to Bloomberg.

“Europe has a problem. They do some wonderful things with their social safety nets, but they have driven away business, they have driven away investment, they have driven away innovation,” Dimon stated.

While he praised certain European leaders for being aware of these challenges, he emphasized that policy reform remains complex and slow-moving across the continent.

Dimon has long warned about the risks of a fragmented Europe. Earlier this year, in his annual letter to JPMorgan shareholders, he pointed out that the European Union faces “several serious problems.”

At the same time, he acknowledged positive achievements such as the creation of the euro and Europe’s long-standing efforts to maintain peace. However, he stressed that declining defense spending and political divisions within the EU pose growing risks.

“If they fragment, then you can say America First will no longer exist. It will affect us more than anyone else, because they are a major ally in every way, including shared values, which are truly important,” Dimon explained.

He argued that the United States should actively support Europe’s long-term strength. “We need a long-term strategy to help them become strong. A weak Europe is harmful to the United States,” the JPMorgan CEO added.

Meanwhile, the bank has also ramped up its own investments in U.S. national security and defense-related industries. In October, JPMorgan announced plans to channel $1.5 trillion into industries that strengthen the country’s economic resilience and security over the next decade.
