The Renaissance masterpiece “The Last Judgment”, painted by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel, will undergo its first restoration in 30 years. The intervention focuses on removing layers of particulate deposits that have accumulated over decades and muted the original colors of the fresco depicting the Second Coming of Jesus.
According to a Vatican press release cited by international news agencies and Agerpres, conservation experts will work for approximately three months. The process aims to restore the chromatic quality and luminosity originally intended by Michelangelo, without altering the artwork’s structure.

The Sistine Chapel remains open during restoration works
The Sistine Chapel will remain open to visitors throughout the restoration period, although the fresco itself will be concealed behind scaffolding. Visitors will instead be able to view a high-definition reproduction of the artwork. As part of the Vatican Museums, the chapel attracts millions of visitors every year and also serves as the site of the secret conclave where Catholic cardinals elect new popes.
