First Global Company to Receive This Certification
Nespresso becomes the first company worldwide to receive the Rainforest Alliance certification for coffee sourced from Yamileth Chacón’s farm in Costa Rica. Rainforest Alliance recently launched a standard for regenerative agriculture, recognizing farms that implement practices to restore soil, increase biodiversity, and maintain ecosystem balance.
Long-standing Commitment to Sustainability
Nespresso has already integrated regenerative practices into its supply chain through long-term collaborations with farmers worldwide. For over two decades, the company has supported the protection of ecosystems in coffee-growing regions and strengthened the resilience of local communities. Purchasing coffee certified under this new standard marks a significant milestone in Nespresso’s partnership with Rainforest Alliance, which began with the launch of the AAA Sustainable Quality™ program. In 2022, Nespresso supported the development of the Rainforest Alliance Regenerative Coffee Scorecard, a framework for small farms transitioning to regenerative practices, which served as the foundation for this standard.

“This certification recognizes the efforts we make to support farming communities in adopting regenerative agriculture. In Romania, we see growing consumer interest in products with a positive environmental impact, and coffee certified as regenerative meets this real need. For Nespresso, sustainability actions directly influence the taste of our coffee, and we are pleased to offer our customers not only high-quality coffee but also the assurance that their choice contributes to a more sustainable future,” said Ana-Maria Doxan, Business Executive Officer, Nespresso Romania.
What the Certification Entails
The Rainforest Alliance certification is based on scientific principles and helps farmers measure their regenerative progress across five impact areas: soil health and fertility, climate resilience, biodiversity, water conservation, and livelihoods. Over 50% of consumers report preferring brands certified by Rainforest Alliance because they trust them (IPSOS 2025).
“Built on four decades of expertise in sustainable agriculture, our new standard combines scientific rigor with regenerative practices, adapted to the crops and regions of each country. We aim to accelerate the transition to a new agricultural model that protects, restores, and regenerates the ecosystems we all depend on. The new seal allows consumers to support this transition by highlighting products from farms that have adopted regenerative methods. For farmers, it means recognition of their efforts, access to broader markets, and increased value for their coffee, all while supporting a resilient future for both people and nature,” explained Santiago Gowland, CEO of Rainforest Alliance.
Starting in 2026, the Rainforest Alliance seal will appear on the packaging of coffee varieties from farms practicing regenerative agriculture. By 2030, the organization aims to support 100 million farmers and workers in adopting regenerative and sustainable practices.
