Orange deploys 5G+ technology in the Bucharest metro, aiming for full coverage by 2026

Orange Romania has launched 5G+ in the Bucharest metro system and plans to extend the technology to 11 stations by the end of the year, enabling mobile speeds of up to 1 Gbps.

The rollout began in November with pilot projects in the Preciziei and Păcii stations. Since then, 5G+ has gone live in Piața Victoriei 1 and 2, and this week the service was activated in Aviatorilor. By the end of December, coverage will expand to major stations across all metro lines: Piața Romană, Universitate, Piața Unirii 1 and 2, Tineretului, Aurel Vlaicu, Pipera and Constantin Brâncoveanu.

Orange aims to provide seamless connectivity not only in stations but also throughout the tunnels, ensuring uninterrupted service for passengers. Network upgrades will also improve the experience for users who remain on 4G. With 5G+, apps and websites load instantly, large files transfer much faster, and video streaming or video calls maintain high quality even when on the move.

For commuters traveling daily between home and work, the new network promises significantly improved stability as coverage expands. Orange plans to achieve full 5G+ coverage in the entire Metrorex system by the end of 2026. The company highlights that it has made the largest investment in Romania’s 5G/5G+ spectrum — €265 million for a 25-year license.

The technology is also far more energy-efficient. As more users connect to 5G+, the power consumption per megabit drops considerably, potentially reaching up to ten times the efficiency of previous generations. The network can also switch to an “economic mode” during low-traffic periods, such as nighttime, when only maintenance and security staff require connectivity.
