Financial aid for farmers hit by extreme weather

Romania will receive €11.5 million from the EU’s agricultural reserve to support farmers whose crops were damaged by the late spring frost. The announcement was made by Christophe Hansen, European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food, who emphasized that this measure is part of the EU’s broader efforts to help producers affected by climate change.

“Another challenge that EU farmers face is climate-related disasters. Romanian farmers know well the realities of climate change. This year, crops were damaged by the late spring frost. Several productions were affected, especially apricots, cherries, peaches, and nectarines. Today, I can announce that we are allocating €11.5 million from the agricultural reserve for Romania, to support you,” said Hansen.

He added that during the next financial period, the European Commission will double the crisis reserve, creating a new “Safety Net of Unity” worth €900 million per year, designed to respond to market disruptions.

Cooperation — the key to competitiveness in agriculture

The European Commissioner also highlighted the importance of improving farmers’ competitiveness.
“The issue of our competitiveness is essential. Joining producer organizations or cooperatives can help you sell your products at better prices. I believe that by cooperating more, you can reduce costs and increase profitability,” he said, noting that supporting young farmers remains a key EU objective.

Hansen welcomed the establishment in Bucharest of a Center for Innovation and Training of Young Leaders and Entrepreneurs in Agriculture, describing it as an important step for the future of rural communities.

“The world is changing fast… European agriculture must continue to thrive, and we will keep supporting it,” he concluded, emphasizing the crucial role Romanian farmers play in ensuring Europe’s food security.
