Rompetrol Rafinare will temporarily halt operations at its two Romanian production units in February for a period of around 30 days, according to sources cited by Economedia.
The company operates the Petromidia Năvodari refinery, the largest in Romania, as well as the Vega refinery. The shutdown is part of a scheduled maintenance cycle designed to ensure the safety and optimal performance of industrial processes.
The timing is notable, as the Romanian energy sector is already facing challenges. The temporary closure of Petromidia comes while the Petrotel refinery in Ploiești remains in an uncertain situation, having not yet restarted following maintenance works. As a result, domestic refining capacity will be reduced for about a month.
Petromidia plays a central role in Romania’s fuel supply, processing roughly 5 million tonnes of raw materials each year. Vega refinery also holds strategic importance, as it is the country’s only producer of bitumen and special solvents.
The news regarding the temporary shutdown was first reported by Financial Intelligence.
