For the first time in history, renewable energy has surpassed coal as the world’s main source of electricity. According to data published by EMBER, the rapid expansion of solar and wind energy managed to fully cover the increase in global electricity demand, reports BBC, cited by Rador.
However, the pace of progress differs across regions. Developing countries are now leading the energy transition, while China continues to dominate the global green technology industry.

China and India Accelerate as the West Falls Behind
In the first half of this year, China added more solar and wind capacity than the rest of the world combined. Meanwhile, India recorded growth in renewable energy production that exceeded its domestic electricity demand.
In contrast, in some developed economies—particularly the United States and the European Union—energy demand has risen faster than clean energy production. This imbalance has led to a temporary resurgence in coal and gas use.
