Transgaz, the operator of Romania’s National Gas Transmission System, reported a consolidated net profit of 681.9 million lei for the first nine months of 2025 — a 4.7-fold increase compared to the same period last year. CEO Ion Sterian states that the company’s market value has also tripled over the past twelve months, driven by major investment projects in Romania and the Republic of Moldova. He highlights the approximately 475 million euros allocated through Transgaz to ensure Moldova’s full independence from Russian gas, based on 2020–2021 benchmarks.

Among the strategic projects now operational are the Tuzla–Podișor pipeline — already carrying gas ahead of Neptun Deep production — and the BRUA corridor, which has operated close to maximum capacity since late 2020. Another major development is the Vertical Corridor, a regional initiative of the Romanian Government implemented by Transgaz, designed to diversify gas supply for Central and Eastern European states via Greece’s LNG terminals.
Sterian points to the increased capacities of the Revithoussa terminal (7 billion cubic meters) and the Alexandroupolis floating terminal (5.5 billion cubic meters), as well as improvements made by Greek and Bulgarian operators, including works on the Rupcha–Vetrino segment. Currently, Romania can export up to 100 million cubic meters per day, while Bulgaria can receive only 14.5 million cubic meters. He warns of potential congestion at Kardam–Negru Vodă during winter, given rising demand, and notes that Romania enters the cold season with 97.5 million cubic meters more gas stored than in 2024.
Transgaz is also in the final stage of a European memorandum coordinated by CESEC and DG Energy, aiming to standardize gas quality across borders, including parameters for biomethane. Sterian stresses that consistent standards are essential to prevent unwanted effects caused by impurities in renewable gases.
He also highlights “Aurora,” the first-ever national exercise dedicated to restoring the National Power System, carried out on 22 November 2025 with seven major energy companies under the coordination of the Special Telecommunications Service. The exercise demonstrated coordinated response capabilities in extreme scenarios. According to Sterian, the development of the Vertical Corridor should be accompanied by a similar regional initiative for electricity transport and production to help reduce energy prices and support renewables.
