European rail travel is set for a major boost in 2026, with faster trains, new cross-border links and upgraded services. A survey of 11,000 people commissioned by Hitachi Rail shows that one in three respondents expects to travel more by train in the next 12 months, rising to 40% within five years.
Against this backdrop, Euronews highlights five rail routes confirmed or planned for launch in 2026.

European Sleeper to relaunch the Paris–Berlin night train. After ÖBB announced the suspension of its Paris–Berlin night services, private operator European Sleeper will take over the route. The first departure is scheduled for 26 March 2026, with three weekly services in each direction.
Faster Paris–Munich connection by late 2026. Deutsche Bahn and SNCF plan a new high-speed service between Paris and Munich. The operators say it will be quicker and more frequent than the current daily TGV.
Prague–Copenhagen day train with family-friendly features. DB, DSB and České dráhy will launch a direct Prague–Copenhagen service via Berlin on 1 May 2026. ComfortJet trains will include a restaurant, Wi-Fi, bike storage and a children’s cinema.
Basel–Malmö night train in the pipeline. SBB has unveiled plans for an overnight EuroNight service from Basel to Copenhagen and Malmö, starting on 15 April 2026, subject to government funding.
London–Stirling, opening up lesser-known Scotland. Low-cost operator Lumo plans to connect London Euston with Stirling from mid-2026, offering easier access to central Scotland.
